This week on Bishop and The Vicars Radio Show, the idea of human dignity is the topic of discussion. In today's society, our understanding of anthropology has been increasingly unmoored from objective standards. The human person is whatever he or she wants to be. In the last episode, Father Connall quoted from the Supreme Court's 1993 decision in Planned Parenthood vs. Casey, "At the heart of liberty is the right to define one's own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life," is a sort of modern "non serviam." The defiant cry of Satan to God, "I will not serve." Opposed to this relativistic understanding of the human person is the Catholic concept of human dignity. In light of so many school shootings, and with the increasing division in our own society, we need the revolutionary understanding of the human person that is brought to light by the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
